Having sex with a Pygmy woman cures from HIV/AIDS. That’s what armed militias in the Eastern Congo believe. And therefore rape Batwa Pigmies on a regular basis. Dalit girls are subjected to “devadasi” practice, which is a religiously sanctioned form of sexual exploitation by dominant castes. Dalit are the lower cast in the Indian system, the so- called “untouchables”. All around the world women from minority communities are discriminated twice: because of their sex and because of their ethnic or religious background. MRG works to empower minority women and protect their rights.

    Situation

Women suffer discrimination, we all are aware of that. What we do not know is that a woman who is also members of a minority or indigenous community is discriminated twice: from inside and from outside her group, because she is women and because of her community. Women from minority or indigenous communities are poorer, more excluded, less visible. They are unaware of their right. They have no access to school. And they are victim of physical and sexual violence. From Asia to Central Africa, Dalit and Batwa parents are mostly illiterate, and cannot pay for school fees. If they can afford to send a child to school, it is usually a boy. Girls are therefore denied social and economical opportunities, and are retained in a circle of poverty. The project will train Dalit and Batwa women to build their self-confidence. We will support them to elaborate campaigns to promote women rights among their own communities. We will engage local authorities to include the education of minority girls in their political agenda and to combat violence against women. Women will be the protagonists of the action. They will acquire skills and knowledge that enable them to protect their rights.
