Although attention often focuses on the Palestinians in Gaza and the Occupied Territories, large numbers of Palestinians remain in the undisputed areas of Israel and as refugees in Lebanon. Both groups face huge levels of discrimination and deep poverty in their day to day lives. This project will primarily tackle the discrimination and poverty of this community in both Israel and its neighbouring Arab state as well as encourage all communities to live peacefully.

    Situation

Palestinian citizens of Israel who make up 20% of the population of Israel are de facto second class citizens, denied equal access to education, basic services and employment. Many of them are also regularly evicted from their own land. In Lebanon, Palestinians live mainly in refugees camp where conditions of living are particularly harsh. For example almost 60% of the Palestinian households living in the 12 official refugees camps of Lebanon have no access to a sewage system. They are forbidden to practice certain professions and have no access to social security provisions, leaving this group experiencing extreme under-development and poverty. There are also serious concerns about the future of the young Palestinians who live in great number in the Lebanese refugee camps but also in Israel : the extremely limited access to quality education, difficulties in accessing to employment and a total lack of integration into both countries mainstream culture, are already shaping the mindset of Palestinian youth. The outcome of such marginalisation threatens to have an extremely adverse effect not only on the Palestinian community as such but also on the other communities living in both Israel and Lebanon. Intimately linked to the increasing marginalisation and under-development of this group is of course the shadow of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the fact that peace may never be achieved without tackling the issues of social fragmentation of local societies and the extreme poverty of Palestinians. This initiative will work at different levels. It will assist organizations representing Palestinians in both Israel and Lebanon to campaign peacefully for effective recognition of the most basic human rights of their community. It will alert public opinion to the situation faced by Palestinians and campaign for improvements in their day to day lives. Central to this project is also building trust and cooperation between Palestinians and the rest of the society in the states where they are established. As part of this objective, specific activities such as youth dialogues, meetings with representatives from different communities, implementation of common mini projects such as the creation of video documentaries on issues affecting all communities are planned.
