In Jamaica, if you have kidney failure, you have no chance of a kidney transplant unless you pay to go to the US. There are many children with kidney failure on the island. Transplant Links plans to work with local doctors to teach the skills to develop a transplant programme at University of W.I.

    Situation

Kidney failure is a growing problem worldwide. A transplant is the best chance of a normal life, but in Jamaica the skills to run a transplant programme do not exist. It would give the chance for a healthy parent to donate a kidney to their own child, so that they may live a normal life again. www.transplantlinks.org

    Solution

We will take medical volunteer teams to Jamaica to work with local doctors to teach skills, and perform transplant operations. Over at least 3 years the skill transfer will continue towards a sustainable transplant programme for the people of Jamaica. Both children and adults with kidney failure will benefit directly, and many more in the future as a result of the skill transfer. www.transplantlinks.org
