The Westcountry Rivers Trust would like to increase dramatically its work with schools across the region to provide non-statutory activities that raise young peoples’ awareness of their local environment and enable teachers to overcome the barriers met when trying to run their own outdoor activities.

    Situation

The Westcountry Rivers Trust is an environmental charity (Charity No: 1045806) established to preserve, protect and improve rivers in the Westcountry and to advance the education of the public in the management of water. Over the past years the Trust has had a very successful education programme working with schools across the region to provide non-statutory activities that raise young peoples’ awareness of their local environment and enable teachers to overcome the barriers met when trying to run their own outdoor activities. Although primary schools are able to provide teacher time, additional staff, and transport from and to a riverside venue, they often meet barriers to running activities. These barriers include the lack of specialist knowledge, equipment and comprehensive risk assessments. In the past we have successfully helped teachers run these activities so that they gain confidence within the field, have the appropriate equipment and can assess the health and safety implications necessary to continue running activities for themselves. The Westcountry Rivers Trust would like to continue its programme of running both in school visits, longer riverside sessions and extended summer projects alongside its junior support club.
