    Situation

Not only is debt escalating but the nature of the debts is changing, becoming more complex with perhaps 10 to 25 creditors, where as in the past it may be simply rent arrears or water or utilities bill. Writing letters to numerous creditors and replying their numerous objections is very time consuming and labour intensive. Caseworkers get bogged down with volumes of administration and the ability to deal with other pressing welfare rights cases and other social problems suffers. To increase efficiency it is proposed that we employ two full time specialist debt admin workers and one full time debt advisor. One specialist admin will continue to deal with existing welfare rights advisor’s debt caseload, whilst the other will support a full time debt advisor. Over the past twelve months we have seen a 266% increase in recorded debt cases. As this is not going to ease up in the foreseeable future we desperately need to increase our capacity to cope with this exponential increase. We want to run this project for five years so we can have a serious impact on debt within the North and East of Coventry. Once people are back in control of their debts, then it should not stop there. We need to work intensively with our client group and other agencies like the local Credit Union to get people to change their spending habits and learn how to control their personal finances, budget better and save more. 5 Years Project Costs Salaries £364,663 On Costs £ 60,083 Management £ 18,715 Total Project £443,461
