    Situation

DEMAND is a registered charity, founded in 1980 to address the, considerable, needs of severely disabled children and adults. DEMAND (Design and Manufacture for Disability) creates bespoke technical solutions to everyday, and less commonplace, living challenges that are encountered by our clients. We are in receipt of no public sector grant aid and rely on voluntary income. DEMAND opened additional premises, seven miles south of Huddersfield in May 2006. This location is near to the “M62 corridor” and places us in close proximity of major population centres in Yorkshire, Lancashire and the whole of the North of England. We have made considerable progress, in our first year, having already completed 46 projects across the region, from Northumberland to Derbyshire and Liverpool to York with a further 30 in progress. We fill a gap in the market and meet the daily needs of disabled people that cannot be met by mainstream manufacturers. Usual commercial considerations and market forces mean that manufacturers and designers only operate where there is a significant and wide spread demand. It is, invariably, the case that it is uneconomic to produce ‘one off’ solutions for people who often have multiple disabilities. However, that is the real and pressing need that DEMAND seeks to meet. Our move into Yorkshire has been facilitated, in part, by a three-year grant from a major Charitable Trust. Unprecedented demand for our service has more than justified our decision to expand. We now need to take the next step forward in consolidating our activities in the North by purchasing our own permanent workshops and securing sufficient revenue support to help us meet an increasing need. We estimate that this will need an investment of £ 1,800,000 over the next five years.
