    Situation

We believe that you can never start too early to recruit potential staff!! Young people aged 13 plus, who have attended our holiday schemes and shown a particular team spirit and aptitude and interest in making friends with children of all abilities are encouraged to become junior helpers, working alongside sessional staff on the holiday projects, with the under fives and with the Saturday Stars. They also attend in-house training courses in equal play, inclusion and disability awareness. Young people from the rural villages, where public transport is infrequent, are offered placements on the rural holiday schemes or transport is arranged to ensure that they can take part. Young people with disabilities have the support of one to one enablers to ensure that they can carry out their jobs effectively. At 17 the junior helpers progress to becoming Young Volunteers, taking on more responsibilities alongside sessional workers, and attending training in child protection, first aid etc. At 18 they can be offered paid sessional work. The project teaches these young people responsibility, self motivation, new skills, team work and work experience, increasing their employabily in the future. They also obviously have lots of fun - they keep coming back year after year!
