Situation
Easington Social Welfare Centre has been operating in Easington Colliery, County Durham since 1935. The objectives of our organisation are to provide social, welfare, training and recreation activities for the whole village. Since the closure of the mine in 1993, revenue income has decreased significantly and the village has faced a downward spiral of decline, with it now being within the top 10% most deprived communities in England & Wales. This is the main community facility within the village that provide a wide range of services and activities for the benefit of the community. The centre has served its community for the past 72 years and today it still continues to provide a central resource for many residents living in Easington Colliery and the surrounding villages. The centre boasts the largest wooden sprung dance hall in the District of Easington that can accommodate 350 people for a social event. However, age is now showing and the building requires extensive refurbishment and remodelling in order to meet modern community building and accessibility requirements. Estimated cost for redevelopment is in the region of £1.7 Million. The centre has had some funding success with £205,000 provided to renew the roof and a further £70,000 for electrical works no completed.
