    Situation

Children will die in the coming weeks unless action is taken now. The hafirs are dry, the surface water has disappeared from Darfur and people are digging down into the dry river beds. The harvest is a virtual failure, and grazing has disappeared. Both people and animals face starvation in many villages in North Darfur. Donkeys are the only means of transport and can carry up to 4 jerry cans, so that children (who can only carry 1 can) will not have to walk across the desert to fetch water. A water cart will provide water for children at school. A Donkey to carry water, costs £50. A Handpump to reduce the long walk for water costs £4,000. To repair a Handpump so that existing water resources are not wasted costs £500, and a Water Cart for Schools costs £230.
