We are seeking £150,000 to develop a coalition to campaign for inclusive state-funded schools, free of religious selection and discrimination. In 2001, a policy of expansion of state-funded religious schools began to be pursued by Government with the planned state funding of Muslim schools and an expansion of state-funded schools and academies controlled by Christian groups. Since that time, we have campaigned hard to promote an alternative vision of inclusive community schools where all children can learn with and from each other. We have achieved a number of successes and chief among these has been the raising of the public profile of this issue, which is now paying off in the support that this vision of shared schools increasingly has from the public and from a number of religious and secular organisations. We believe that there is a valuable opportunity right now to build a coalition of these organisations and individuals which can have a great impact by building public support for our vision of shared schools, changing the policy context in which the expansion of state-funded religious schools is proceeding, and working to make shared schools a reality. We intend to make a financial commitment of up to £30,000 to the initial formation of a coalition, but as a small organisation we cannot sustain the higher level of funding needed to get such a significant coalition as this off the ground. We need funding to staff a high-flying campaign co-ordinator and staff who will reach out to the unions, religious groups and other community organisations who share our vision of shared community schools and inclusive learning and take the campaign to the next level.
