The British Humanist Association (BHA) sponsors and supports a group of ex-Muslims, officially launched as the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain in June 2007. We are seeking £130,000 over two years to pay for a full-time manager and administrative support for the group, and provide a small budget for its activities.

    Situation

The BHA seeks £130,000 over a two year period to get the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain onto a firm footing. Since its founding only a few months ago, the group has already made an important contribution and received widespread publicity and support. The group is committed to individual human rights, equality, secularism, non-sectarian education, freedom of expression, citizenship, and of course to the universal right to change or reject ones religion. As a group of ex-Muslims, the Council is well placed to challenge political Islam and extremism in Europe, and we believe that its unique perspective on Islam and Islamists, which has been instrumental in its success, provides a new way of challenging the political Islamic movement from a progressive perspective. This rare opportunity will be lost if the Council continues to be run by volunteers with full-time jobs and limited time, and the group urgently needs funding and staffing if it is to build on its early successes. After the two-year funding period, the group aims to be self-sustaining, via fundraising, donations and legacies.
