This is the last phase of a 10 year project to restore and conserve the south and public-facing side of Gloucester Cathedral. The end is in sight, and with your help we can raise the last £70,000 to repair the roof and ensure the Cathedral remains in the best possible condition for everyone.

    Situation

The roof covering has come to the end of its service-life as many of the stone tiles are in bad condition, and at least 50% of them need to be replaced to prevent leakage and protect the newly restored stonework directly beneath. There is further evidence suggesting that internal guttering is leaking within the roof which if left, could cause irreparable damage. The lead covering and guttering at the west end of the roof also needs repair as it fails to meet recommended requirements.

    Solution

This project is a crucial part of the scheduled maintenance programme for the Cathedral. Replacing roof covering that is no longer fit for purpose, and repairing any timber and masonry that has decayed due to water ingress will ensure that the roof and the stonework below will suffer no long term damage. Improved arrangements for maintenance will be included so that any potential blockages can be attended to safely, and without damage to the roof covering
