    Situation

Cerebral palsy is a very disabling lifelong condition caused by damage to the developing brain. Affected children are unable to eat adequately; poor food intake causes malnutrition and leads to ill health and further compromise of neurological development. The brain of infants has some capacity for repair and regeneration. Recent research has shown that certain dietary components are essential as building blocks for the making of nerves and their connections within the brain. This project aims to provide optimised nutritional input including these building blocks to see if the growth and development of children with cerebral palsy can be improved.  Cerebral palsy affects 2-3 in every 1000 babies born worldwide. 1500 babies annually in the UK  Feeding a child with cerebral palsy is very demanding, resulting in poor nutrition and secondary health problems in approx 6000 children in the UK  Researchers aim to supplement the diet of children with unsaturated fatty acids.  Clinical benefit: potential to improve early management of cerebral palsy in short to medium term.
