    Situation

Burns and scalds are some of the most common and devastating forms of trauma and children are at particular risk. Annually, almost 37,000 UK children under the age of 15 will be injured in burns and scalds accidents, with the majority under 5 years of age. The scars which can form are tough and tighten the skin, causing pain and problems with movement and children are more likely to develop permanent scars as a result of their injuries than adults. Large and prominent scars can have profound functional and psychological implications for all ages, not least children. Sparks funding will help doctors to develop better treatments that should result in reduced scarring.
