Half Moon is in the process of buying its building from the local authority in order to undertake a major capital redevelopment, including renovation of the beautiful eccentric Victorian facade, improvements to the public areas and facilities and the creation of studio space for emerging artists working with young people. Completion of this project will enable Half Moon to meet the requirements of the company, its users, audiences and community, now and in the future.

    Situation

Half Moon provides opportunities for young people of all abilities and backgrounds to experience professional theatre and to engage in participatory arts and community activity in a building that has historical importance for the neighbourhood. Sited within the Stepney Green Conservation Area, its grand architecture and eccentric façade made it one of the most significant buildings in the area. The company now has a wonderful opportunity to secure the future of its work for young people by purchasing the freehold from Tower Hamlets. Some parts of the building are in need of urgent repair, including extensive external renovation and redecoration, as well as repairs to the roof. Although the building is fully accessible, the public facilities must be upgraded to meet the requirements of our users, audiences and performers. In recent years Half Moon has acted as a catalyst for cultural exchange, by engaging with artists and companies which place an emphasis on diversity - cultural or ability. We now have plans to remodel the basement area of the building to provide studio space for emerging professional companies providing work for young audiences. We will support these companies by offering access to the resources of the building, thus creating a ‘laboratory’ space for creating new work for young people. Our vision is to have a building that: · is in keeping with its surroundings · acknowledges its social and historical past · serves a function in regenerating a deprived area · acts as a beacon for theatre for young people · provides a stimulus for creative work and creative responses to that work.
