Since 2008, the Winter Lantern parade organised by CREATE has become a staple part of the community events calendar in Tunbridge Wells. The planning, making and parade brings together thousands of people from across the town but with the reduction of public funding, it is up to us to keep it going.
It ran from 12:00 AM, 1 February 2013 to 12:00 AM, 1 February 2014

CREATE was set up to shine a spotlight on Camden Road, Tunbridge Wells. Described by some as an area of deprivation, in an otherwise affluent town, a group got together to find ways of representing the road's rich history and culture. An early project was the Winter Lantern Parade. At that time, there were no Christmas lights down Camden Road. We decided to book venues for lantern workshops. Hundreds of people arrived to build lanterns which we could parade together through the streets.
Participation in the community makes it a better place to live. The Lantern Parade gives everyone a chance to be part of something bigger and celebrate the town through our streets. The parade has become an annual event representing a wide range of groups including the local Cancer drop-in centre, schools and scout groups and samba band. It attracts a growing number of visitors each year raising awareness of what is going on in the town and enabling us to raise money for other local charities.
