This campaign has now closed

This project is working with the government and teachers to improve the quality of education on a sustainable basis on the Shinyanga region of Tanzania. The programme, EQUIP – Education Quality Improvement through Pedagogy – has been up and running since 2003. And, since then, Oxfam has seen huge improvements to the quality of teaching in Shinyanga. Exam results have improved by 30 per cent and the number progressing on to secondary school has doubled. With your support, Oxfam can ensure these improvements are continued and replicated nationally to benefit thousands more children in Tanzania.

    Situation

This is a new three year phase of the EQUIP project. Up until 2008 we developed the EQUIP model to vastly improve the quality of teaching in Shinyanga. We will now ensure the progress continues. To achieve this, we will develop four new NGOs – partners who will play the role of expert service providers. They will implement services such as in-service teacher training in Shinyanga districts, and enable the practices to be replicated across Tanzania in the long term. Project aims The district authorities have committed to sustain the good work. To ensure the progress continues we will: - Establish independent NGOs to manage and promote the good practices initiated by the project. - Continue to provide and improve in-service training and mentoring for teachers until the new NGOs are established. - Improve the availability of teaching materials, particularly for children with special needs. - Improve water and sanitation facilities in schools with the greatest need. - Encourage teachers to share successful methods. - Ensure the management of schools and education services is effective and accountable – and promote the progress of girls and women.
