Improving food security is increasingly important as Niger is subject to even greater extremes in times of climate change. Oxfam aims to empower local communities to more effectively manage their scarce resources, like water, and on which they, their crops and their cattle so heavily rely.

    Situation

Bani Bangou’s people depend entirely on natural resources, which are increasingly threatened by climate change. Rains are failing; wells drying out rapidly and vegetation cover has hugely declined. This is reducing groundwater retention and leaving soil increasingly infertile. The strain on dwindling resources is growing, as is conflict between farmers and nomadic cattle herders. Without sufficient access to water, local people's food, health and security and livelihoods are all at risk.

    Solution

With limited resources available, effective stewardship of water and land is vital. So Oxfam is working with Karkara (a local partner organisation) to empower local communities to take control of and better manage their available land and water resources. This project will focus on long-term behavioural change and encourage communities to work in collaboration with local authorities.
