The project seeks to address the dual problem of fear of digital technology and the loneliness and isolation that many elderly people with sight loss experience, by providing a simple to use, internet based piece of audio equipment with personal technical support to resolve both problems.

    Situation

    Older people are less likely to use the Internet not perceiving the benefits it might bring and feeling inadequate to take on the learning to access information. For an elderly person who has also lost their sight, the barrier is almost insurmountable. As uptake of our ‘Sonata Plus’ internet-based radio & audio library player is low amongst the older generation of visually impaired people, despite it being a very easy to use piece of equipment with much to offer, we want to address this.

    Solution

    Our project will solve the problem by recruiting & training technical volunteers who can give sufficient time to potential users to take them through every step of the process, discussing and explaining the benefits of the set, demonstrating use and providing personal instruction so as to break down real or perceived barriers and help prospective recipients to overcome any fears they might have.
