The project will provide support for the siblings of life-limited children. Siblings suffer enormously as they have to watch their brother or sister battle for their life. They are often the only child in their community whose sibling is sick and so need specialist support.

    Situation

Siblings of life-limited children are often isolated and feel unable to express their fears because they do not want to cause extra worry to their already anxious parents. As a result they may withdraw into themselves or suffer from a range of mental health issues included eating disorders, self harm and disruptive behaviours. Furthermore the child's education may suffer as they are no longer able to receive the support at home needed to help them excel at school.

    Solution

We will provide a specialist worker who can develop age-appropriate peer support groups which will help children and young people who are witnessing their sibling's battle against a life-limiting illness. The worker will provide one-to-one support to help children and young people express their fears in an environment in-which they feel safe. The worker will also develop homework clubs and drop in clubs to help families juggling hospital and childcare.
