Kainos Community is a charity built on Christian foundations which offers prisoners the chance to work through a 6 month accredited programme to address their offending behaviour and adopt a crime free life. The prisoners live in community, supporting each other, practising what they have learned.

    Situation

Over 60% of ex-offenders offend again within two years and end up back in custody. This means the prison population is growing at approximately one hundred people per week. This costs around £40,000 per offender and leaves families broken and children without parents to care for them. Challenge to Change challenges male offenders to address their criminal behaviour and make a new start so that they do not reoffend again back into prison and can start to contribute to society.

    Solution

We run a Prison Service accredited programme. Independent research shows that it does reduce reoffending by a significant amount. The programme takes place on a prison wing in a community setting providing an environment for prisoners to address their offending behavior through course work, community living, team building, social interaction and ongoing individual assessment. Volunteers visit every week to keep men in touch with the outside world and to provide good role models for the future.
