Situation

Young people who've been in custody, find it hard to get a job, rebuild relationships or find somewhere to live. In a report published by Home Office young people clearly said they weren't prepared enough for life back in the community after leaving prison/YOI. Evidence shows that 75% of young offenders leave YOI without a job to go to. Yet having a job reduces the likelihood of re-offending by as much as 50 %.

Solution

Project will develop horticultural infrastructure within institutions/prisons (gardens, farms etc.) and use it as a platform to engage with young people interested in horticulture and build close relationships between them and their mentors in order for it to continue after their release. They will liaise with pre-release and resettlement teams and will prepare accommodation and other arrangements (welfare, health, etc.) in time for their release when they will be put into paid employment.
