Taking part in creative activities can have a lasting and transforming effect on the lives of young people. We want to inspire and enable people from across Manchester to fulfil their creative potential, get healthy and have fun with a free summer participatory dance festival.

    Situation

Hulme is one of the most deprived inner city areas in England. Zion Arts centre is a much loved local resource giving young people somewhere to go, express themselves, gain skills and build confidence with a range of creative activites. The large dance studio which used to be the most well equiped in the region, is in need of refurbishment. The dance floor is a H&S hazard and it is getting too hot to dance in comfort, People have stopped using the studio for these reasons.

    Solution

We intend to upgrade the studio by repairing the floor, improving the mirrors, painting the walls and decorating the changing rooms and installing air conditioning. We will then work with young people, local professional dancers and dance organisations to promote and run a free participatory dance summer festival to get people back into the studio and back dancing again. The festival will be promoted to local schools, youth and community groups.
