Situation

The Christopher Tower Reference Library has been enormously successful in attracting large and significant donations of printed material since it first opened its doors in 2004. Since then, much work has been done on sorting, cataloguing, conserving and displaying books, postcards, maps and documents but little time has been available to improve and increase access. It is the realisation that this amazing resource in so underused that has led us to try to rectify the situation.

Solution

The project will solve the problem by allowing us to employ an individual to look specifically at ways of broadening audiences and increasing access. This could be achieved through a mix of on-site and outreach activities including, talks, workshops, schools projects and exhibitions. New audiences would be introduced to primary source and archival material and learn to engage with local history through exploration of their families and their homes.
