Distribute 100,000 pairs of sandals to poor, destitute children, to help prevent hookworm infections. Children in this group usually walk around barefoot because their families cannot afford footware. Hookworm larvae usually enter children's bodies through the skin of their feet.

Situation

Hookworms are a leading cause of maternal and child morbidity in the developing countries of the tropics and subtropics. In susceptible children, hookworms cause intellectual, cognitive and growth retardation, intrauterine growth retardation, prematurity, and low birth weight among newborns born to infected mothers.

Solution

ChildrenPlus will distribute long-lasting, lightweight sandals that, when worn, will prevent hookworm larvae from entering the body through the feet - the most common method of infection.
