    Situation

Our work with families and local community organisations recently highlighted that many families who had children on the autism spectrum were concerned about bringing their children to a performance at the theatre. They were worried that the children would make noises, be fidgety or disturb other families. Polka listened to this feedback and in June 2007 we piloted an ‘Autism Friendly’ performance of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. This was a dedicated performance for families with children on the autism spectrum. Tickets numbers were restricted to ensure that the experience was not too daunting for the children and we worked with two local autism family support groups. Following these consultations we ensured that adaptations were made to the lights and the sounds: the house lights were left at half brightness throughout the performance and the music was played at half volume to ensure that the theatrical experience was not too overwhelming. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Families enjoyed the performance, appreciated the restricted capacity and 80% of attenders wanted to come back for more autism friendly performances. “both my children were able to sit throughout and I could relax if they shouted or fidgeted. Can’t wait for the next one. First time I’ve felt brave enough to go to the theatre.” “More autism friendly performances please!” “Perfect that it wasn’t too full and not too noisy and that we could sit in the front row without being worried that any behaviour would disturb others. This was my son’s first proper visit to the theatre that he has joined in with (his autism and visual impairment make it difficult) Thanks.”
