The BrightSparks Schools’ Concerts are often the first experience of a concert hall for many of the pupils attending. The opportunity to see and hear a live symphony orchestra can be a wonderfully inspiring experience for many children and when this is combined with the Orchestra’s schools’ workshop programme the overall benefits to the pupils can be substantial.

    Situation

Schools from Greater and Central London are invited to attend the BrightSparks Concerts and selected schools that do attend the concerts are then invited to take part in the workshop programme ConcertLink which is based around the themes and contents of the concerts. The Orchestra also produces a special Teacher’s Pack with CD. This contains information on the music to be performed at the concert, including a CD, as well as biographical information on the composers and historical context. The packs provide suggestions on how to prepare the children for the experience in order that they get the most out of their visit and are compatible to be used with an interactive white board and include video footage, interactive games and free access to the Naxos Music Library. In accordance with the Orchestra’s commitment that every school child in the country should experience a live orchestral performance at least once during their time at school, the London Philharmonic Orchestra has increased the number of BrightSparks concerts to 10 in the 2008/09 season and will continue to increase them until we reach 14 in the 2010/11 season. To ensure that cost is not a barrier to participation, neither the schools, nor the students will be asked to pay anything to take part. As the Orchestra does not receive public funding for this or for any of its education projects, we ask for your support to help us make this programme possible this season.
