Renga is a mixed ensemble of London Philharmonic Orchestra musicians that collaborates with performers and composers from outside the classical mainstream. It creates its own repertoire of music, some written and much prepared by ear, extending the skills of its members into the creative working environment of folk and jazz musicians and those from other cultures.

    Situation

Through the Renga ensemble the London Philharmonic Orchestra has the opportunity to take the Orchestra from the concert hall to the community. The collaboration between the Orchestra’s players and professional non-classically trained musicians gives an astonishing result of high quality music, full of imagination, creativity and improvisation. All participants benefit from the exchange of musical styles and techniques which contribute to the development of their performance, improvisational skills and knowledge of musical genres. Concerts in 2008/09 have included: On 5 October 2008 Renga performed in the Royal Festival Hall a new version of the Indian Song Cycle Nava Rasa by Sandya Sanjana. This piece was developed in collaboration with Renga. To ensure that cost is not a barrier to attendance most of the performances by the Renga ensemble are offered for free. As the Orchestra does not receive public funding for this or for any of its education projects, we ask for your support to help us make this programme possible this season.
