    Situation

The Casa de la Alegria (CDLA) was set up by a US philanthropist in 2003 to give homes to abandoned or orphaned girls from the city of Cochabamba. Initially the running of the home was funded almost exclusively by the abovementioned benefactor, however, several years ago, he became ill, was unable to work and consequently could no longer give financial support to the home. Since then income has come only from local charitable sources and friends; the current director, from her own personal savings (she is working without a salary); and sales of handicrafts made by the girls. Meals for the girls have had to be cut back to subsistence levels. There has been no investment in infrastructure or maintenance thereof since this change in situation discussed above, nor has it been possible to purchase a number of items required by the girls for their schooling. There are currently 20 girls in the CDLA and unless an alternative source of income is found the CDLA may have to close leaving the girls without a home. The minumum annual running costs of the home are $15,000. Ideally we are seeking the placement in trust of an amount of money (estimated in the order of $200,000 - $300,000) which could generate annually the requirements for this home or, if this is not possible, support of any sort to allow this existing, caring home to remain open and for the girls who currently live there not to be left without a home.
