This project aims to: 1. tackle social exclusion and isolation amongst visually impaired people in Derby and surrounding areas by funding specialist transport provision 2. improve the wellbeing of visually impaired people by enabling access to services and activities which would otherwise be impossible 3. provide a viable alternative to public transport which can be very difficult for visually impaired people to use, especially those with additional disabilities

    Situation

Why is the project needed? 1. loss of sight is a frightening and demoralising experience and can lead to anxiety and depression, loss of independence, isolation and poor health 2. RNIB research identified sparse public transport as one of the barriers to a healthier and more active life style for the visually impaired 3. Using public transport can be extremely difficult for visually impaired people, especially in rural areas such as those around Derby, and they may feel vulnerable and can become stranded if services fail. What are the project goals? This project is essential for our users as it enables them to access valuable services that would be impractical otherwise, promoting social inclusion and access to resources in both rural and urban communities. For example, Evelyn has a visual impairment and mobility issues which make using public transport unsuitable. She felt lonely and isolated before attending DAB activities. Now she says DAB outings are the highlight of her week and she can’t imagine how she survived previously. By providing transport in volunteer or staff members own cars, or in DAB's adapted minibus we will be able to transport visually impaired people safely to social groups, activity groups such as knitting, bowling and swimming, on trips, on 'taster days' where they can improve confidence by trying something new etc 3 year expenditure: Minibus costs = £6,249 Staff expenses eg fuel = £3,663 Volunteer expenses = £1,218 Vehicle hire = £954 Total = £12,084
