Situation
In Kassala State, lives and livelihoods depend on agriculture, but frequent droughts and poor access to small-scale farming technologies threaten families' ability to meet even their basic food needs. These families are some of the poorest in Sudan; some displaced by conflict while others are pastoralists who have lost their herds through drought and are now dependent on farming. Practical Action is particularly focusing on women, as they are vulnerable to discrimination and hostility.
Solution
Practical Action is strengthening the future self-reliance of farmers by providing them with access to innovative technologies and training. For example: -Constructing two knowledge and resource centres -Improving water access through introducing innovative water harvesting techniques -Establishing women's co-operative farms -Providing food processing and production training -Training farmers in basic vetinerary skills to act as paravets -Providing natural resource management training
