    Situation

Access to education for women is often restricted for social, cultural and financial reasons. Literacy levels are 16.6% for women and 31.4% for men. In rural areas illiteracy among girls has been as high as 95%. This is despite the government’s attempt and campaigns to change societal attitudes toward girl’s education. Apart from providing adult literacy and micro-enterprise, the projects will also tackle some of women’s daily problems, particulalry violence, through awareness raising.

    Solution

The project is a direct response to women’s demands for support in income generating activities with a credit fund as none has any collateral for conventional loans. Union Groupements Féminins, our Burkinabe partner is direct implementing and managing partner for promoting socio-economic rights of women living in poverty. Women will get training in functional literacy to access information, income, demand services, and have full and frank discussions on civic rights and responsibilities.
