Advantage Africa has started a new project with child-headed households in a slum for displaced Karamajong people in Masese, Jinja, Uganda. The project aims to reduce the vulnerability of 40 children to sexual and economic exploitation and prevent them from becoming ‘street kids’ by meeting their needs for education, food, health, and a ‘secure adult’ to whom they can relate.

    Situation

Advantage Africa aims to support the longer term needs of the children in child headed households with activities that will help them earn a fairer, more significant, sustainable income and protect their health by: - Promoting small scale income generating enterprises such as water vending and charcoal making. - Creating awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention and care among the child-headed households. - Improving the housing conditions of families and thereby protecting them from diseases such as TB and scabies. - Building the skills and capacity of the 'core team' of four inspirational people running the project. £6,200 is required to enable the project to take place including £2,400 for housing improvements, £1,000 for income generation, £1,200 for AIDS activities and £600 towards training of the core team. This project will help Advantage Africa to improve the lives of some of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable children in Africa. It will provide them with the skills and knowledge to protect themselves against HIV, diseases related to poor housing, and exploitation on the street. By supporting their health, self reliance and ability to remain at school, a grant to this project will help these children to realise their long term aspirations to secure jobs and contribute to the development of their community.
