    Situation

This would be through our continuing work in secondary schools with dynamic, multi-media presentations using “evaluate…informing choice” programmes to different age groups of young people. We have ten ‘virtual babies’ which we use in our programme. We work in schools, pupil referral units, young people’s groups and in other settings, tailoring the programme to fit the requirements of the young people. We fully recognise the importance of involving young men as well as young women in this work and so we involve teenage parents (working in partnership with existing young parent support groups) as peer educators. We work with school PSHE co-oordinators to ensure we follow National Curriculum guidelines and requirements and with the local Teenage Pregnancy Partnership Co-ordinator. We offer the fpa’s “speakeasy4parents” course to equip parents and carers with the knowledge and confidence to talk to their children from an early age about sexual health and behaviour. We run this course in local primary schools and in small groups in people’s homes. We are also working closely with social workers and support groups to offer specially tailored programmes to people with learning difficulties. We use our virtual babies very effectively to enable students in special schools to be aware of sexual health and behaviour issues and gain an understanding of the demands and needs of a newborn baby.
