    Situation

Over the last four years we have developed the delivery of an information, advice and representation service tailored to meet the needs of those with mental health and related problems who may experience difficulties in accessing other welfare rights provision available in the community. Advice services are provided by telephone, and through outreach surgeries held in existing community mental health settings across Renfrewshire and Glasgow. In addition, we offer a home visiting service to clients who are unable to attend community facilities. We have also developed a range of plain English, self-help resources and fact-sheets which are available to download from SAMH website or in hard by post. Another key activity has been to raise awareness of benefit entitlement through training and presentations across the fair share areas (areas of increased poverty and social exclusion as defined by the National Lottery Grant making body). This training has enabled smaller mental health organisations across Scotland to raise awareness with their own service users of their entitlement to welfare benefit and to support them to make claims. Our advice workers also recognise the importance of re-entering employment and where appropriate they have been able to provide support to assist claimants back into the workplace. This has developed the opportunities to further avoid poverty and debt among this vulnerable group. In addition to working with clients our advice workers also work with employers to enable them to adapt to accommodate staff who may have additional needs. SAMH is currently working on a series of publications that will provide employers with information about ‘Reasonable Adjustments’ and how to create a mentally healthy work place.
