There is more than a hint of time travel about Gwent Wildlife Trust’s latest bold venture to ensure that our wildlife will still be around to be enjoyed by our children’s children.

    Situation

We will develop a wood-pasture landscape, dating back to the ˜open forest” of prehistoric Britain, but which continued to be found on the Trellech Ridge up until the late 19th century. Isolated populations of plants and animals are always vulnerable to extinction. Many species cannot cross large areas of open, intensively-managed farmland. The number of rare and sensitive species dwindle in these pockets of habitat, and the lack of connections prevents species from recolonising suitable habitats

    Solution

Our vision is a strong network of grassland, woodland and wetland across this 400-square kilometre swathe of countryside in the south-eastern corner of Wales. Wyeswood Common will be a superb landscape, freely open to all. It will be a place for people to enjoy and learn about wildlife. The Trust owns a mediaeval barn next to their Pentwyn Farm reserve. The barn will provide a venue for education and community events.
