Situation
Climate change is affecting the lives of some of the poorest and most marginalised communities in rural South India. This project is helping people in two diverse areas to adapt to the problems caused by the great variations in climate. Many people in these areas are dependent on seasonal agricultural labour for work. Crops have been destroyed or diseased. Water scarcity followed by severe storms causes damage to the soil, housing and roads. There are new health problems and increasing migration
Solution
Our beneficiaries would be a tribal group in the Nilgiri Hills and a remote community on the dry plains of Tamil Nadu. Working with partner NGOs and researchers we have established and prioritised a series of measures that can be taken to help beneficiaries adapt to climate change. Among them, new crops and trees will be grown, solar energy will be introduced, health issues will be tackled, new housing materials will be used and water harvesting will take place. New products will be marketed.
