Extensive community-based research in our two project areas revealed a relationship between the lack of sanitation and poor health. Having trialled different models we have now embarked on a programme to build 100 family toilets where the need is greatest. A toilet unit costs just £120. The cost is divided into thirds paid for by Tamwed, government grants and beneficiary contributions.

    Situation

We are supporting a programme that will build 100 toilets, 50 in each of the two project areas, which started in November 2008 and continues until March 2010. Tamwed’s funding adds to government grants, loans and beneficiary contributions towards the cost of each unit. Some families will be building wash houses next door to their toilets. We have deliberately targeted the most needy communities and will extend the programme as funds allow. Tamwed is providing £4,133 towards the overall costs of construction and supervision which amounts to about one third of each unit cost.
