    Situation

Bangladesh has the sixth highest rate of newborn deaths anywhere in the world. 120,000 babies die every year mainly in the first weeks of life. Mothers too are dying – 11,600 every year. Most deaths are preventable if only mothers had basic knowledge and the resources to do something about how to prevent infections, how to care for themselves in pregnancy to prevent for example low birth weight babies and when to get skilled help when giving birth.

    Solution

We will empower women with the knowledge they need to keep themselves and their babies healthy and safe. Through forming community based women’s groups, we will support women to decide and prioritise what the main problems are around maternal and newborn care in their community, plan what can be done with local resources and put those plans into action eg. women may decide to set up a village saving scheme for emergency transport to a health facility for life saving medical help
