Simply put, we deliver support for people living with HIV, from people living with HIV; providing a firsthand understanding of the issues the individuals accessing our services face and as well as the (often first) opportunity to talk to another HIV positive person.

Situation

By the end of 2011, an estimated 96,000 people were living with HIV in the UK, including about 73,400 people diagnosed and 22,600 who were infected but undiagnosed. People living with HIV not only face serious health concerns but many also fear the stigma and discrimination from other members of society, even family members and friends, towards HIV. This often prevents them from talking about their HIV or engaging with health and/or social care.

Solution

Integrated into clinics across London, on the end of our national helpline, and in sessions at our Islington premises, our peer workers provide the (often first) opportunity for anyone newly diagnosed or who has not previously accessed care to meet or talk to another person living with HIV. Their first-hand understanding of the issues people living with HIV face puts them in the best position to gain the trust of others and support them to achieve the best quality of life.
