Lira district in Northern Uganda suffered massive population displacement during the recent war. In 2006/7 however the district experienced a massive return of IDP's (Internally Displaced Persons) leaving the area with a sudden resurgence in population without sufficient infrastructure to support them following the damage suffered during the conflict. Many who have returned are those who missed out on education due to the war and need to find a way of creating livelihoods for themselves.
This project will provide bicycles, bicycle repair, maintenance and riding skills to 200 people. 100 of these will be existing bicycle repair artisans who currently lack sufficient skills and tools to improve and expand their businesses. This will provide these people with skills with which to set up bicycle repair workshops and also give them the means to travel around the district more easily in order to be able to reach sources of employment.
