Pity is that hares don't breed like rabbits and an acceptance of the speed of hares from nursery stories such as 'The Hare and the Tortoise' will become purely legendary as they vanish from the scenery.

    Situation

Brown Hare numbers have shown an 80% decrease over the 20th Century. A major barrier to conservation of Brown Hare is a lack of information on distribution and abundance. Illegal hunting with dogs continues to remain a serious problem, particularly prevalent amongst teenage boys. Saving our hares is reliant on a number of activities namely surveying and monitoring, habitat management and a school education programme, which will help us to alleviate their current demise. Then who knows, maybe they will 'breed like rabbits'.
