Situation

A sooty black cap and a strong neck gives the Willow Tit a bolshy appearance as it excavates its own nest-hole - unusual amongst the tit family. But despite its tough appearance, the UK population has fallen by 90 per cent in the past 30 years, placing it on the red list of species of conservation concern. Much of the Willow Tits’ decline is down to loss of habitat with developers seeing no merit in the willow scrub which these beautiful birds inhabit.

Solution

The Lancashire Wildlife Trust is working to protect the habitat of these wonderful black, white and brown birds, focusing on the wetlands which dominate the countryside around Wigan.
