    Situation

Terrorism is an inescapable part of daily reality in areas of Pakistan. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province stretches from the streets of Peshawar to the notorious tribal areas that cross over to neighbouring Afghanistan. In the province the Taliban is actively trying to destablize the state - and they recruit young people to do so. More than 4000 people have been killed in over 250 suicide attacks in the last three years. In all 250 attacks, the perpetraitors were under the age of 26.

    Solution

Local organisation Aware Girls, funded by Peace Direct, trains young people to be advocates for peace. These volunteers will work with the most vulnerable young people in their community – those that express extremist views and who consider violence to be an acceptable political tool. They will prevent young people from joining militiant organisations, by deconstructing hatred towards the non-muslim world through promoting values of tolerance, respect, and non-violence among young people.
