This project will train local builders in sustainable building technologies to construct essential community facilities such as classroom blocks, low cost teachers' accommodation and water and sanitation facilities in Central Province, Zambia that will improve access to basic education for over 1750 children. The builders will be trained and supported by BII’s technical advisors and the new skills learned will create much needed employment opportunities for community members.

    Situation

This project will create job opportunities for local people while at the same time improving access to primary education for rural children. At present, the lack of school facilities and teachers are a serious constraint to universal primary education, a key objective of the Zambian government and one of the Millennium Development Goals. Over two years we will upgrade six schools by constructing classrooms, sanitation facilities and teacher houses, essential if the schools are to attract and retain well qualified staff. Expected benefits from the programme • 4 local builders managing expanding businesses and in turn employing and training community members. • 6 new two-classroom blocks for over 1750 pupils and 12 teacher houses. • Water collection and latrine facilities at all schools. • Adoption of more environmentally and locally appropriate technologies, including interlocking stabilised soil blocks that are air rather than fire cured reducing the need to cut down trees and rainwater harvesting. All the technologies are easily taught and the machines easy to use.
