This programme aims to improve access to primary education for rural children in Zambia. At present, the lack of school facilities and teachers are a serious constraint to universal primary education, a key objective of the Zambian government and one of the Millennium Development Goals.

    Situation

Over two years we will upgrade six schools by constructing classrooms, sanitation facilities and teacher houses, essential if the schools are to attract and retain well qualified staff. At the same time, community members will be trained as builders using appropriate technologies. This will improve their chances of finding work and improving their lives. Expected benefits from the programme • 4 local builders managing expanding businesses and in turn employing and training community members. • 6 new two classroom blocks for over 1750 pupils and 12 teacher houses. • Water collection and latrine facilities at all schools. • Adoption of more environmentally and locally appropriate technologies, including interlocking stabilised soil blocks that are air rather than fire cured reducing the need to cut down trees and rainwater harvesting. All the technologies are easily taught and the machines easy to use. It will cost approximately £25,000 to complete one school including all support and monitoring costs.
