If it’s not sustainable, it’s not development. Every action AfriKids takes has a follow on sustainability action; whether this is providing micro- finance to a family alongside putting their children in school or providing cement alongside food aid to help rebuild flood damaged homes for displaced people. Reinforcing this micro sustainability work are our macro sustainability businesses; these are the big bold initiatives designed to generate the income needed to fund AfriKids Ghana’s work independently in the long term.

    Situation

Currently over 90% of our income is from charitable support through fundraising in the UK. This can be broken down with roughly a third of this coming from trusts and foundations, a third from individuals and the community, and a third being raised through events. The remainder of our income is raised in country in Ghana. It is our long term goal that our UK office will close by 2018, with 100% of our running costs being generated independently in Ghana, not through charity or fundraising, but through profit-making businesses. As well as our child rights projects, AfriKids Ghana owns and runs businesses with the sole intention of generating profits that can be pumped back into our child rights work. These include the AfriKids Medical Centre, an Eco‐ Lodge and several ethical trade programmes. The profit from these sustainability initiatives feed back into the projects and will one day make charitable proposals like the one you’re reading redundant. In 2009, AfriKids Ghana generated over £77,000 through these sustainability businesses. This is 15.5% of what is expected to be the annual running costs of AfriKids Ghana in 2018. AfriKids is about charity here and now as a helping hand, not to create dependency.
