AfriKids believe that children are nearly always best off at home, being raised by relatives, and kept away from institutional care. That is why the children we help are supported to stay in or return to their family homes. However, for some children residential care is required.

    Situation

In northern Ghana there are many children in need of support because their families are unable to care for them. With child labour, child trafficking, extreme poverty and the spirit child phenomenon still prevalent, our work focuses on supporting displaced children to ensure that their rights are respected.

    Solution

AfriKids has established four child rights centres in northern Ghana which have the capacity for residential care; the Next Generation Home, Mama Laadi’s Foster Home both in Bolgatanga, the Angus Child Rights Centre in Sirigu and the Operation Smiles centre in Nakuaabi. With the exception of Mama Laadi’s Foster Home where the most vulnerable children are cared for from birth to adulthood, the centres are transitional. Where possible we always aim to work with families to resettle children.
