'Playing Up' is a programme developed by the National Youth Theatre to provide access to drama education for those not in education, employment or training. It takes young people from a once a week drop in to a three day a week access course that enables them to get into drama school or university. It has a higher than average success rate.

    Situation

'Playing Up' was developed from our existing work within youth offender institutions. We realised that we needed to create a more sustainable model to provide access to drama education to young people once they were no longer within the justice system. This has led to the development of a robust model of practice which is engaging, non-traditional and currently being delivered in London and Brierley Hill but with ambitions to roll this success out in Glasgow, North Kent and Manchester. The pilot group of 20 participants completed the 'Playing Up 2' programme in 2009. This resulted in 18 graduations from which 16 participants got a Level 3 qualification (the equivalent of 2 A'levels) with one still to take their final examination and 13 have been offered places in drama colleges or universities. To provide a free Open Access course in a UK city costs between £24 to £35k a year and can accommodate 200 young people and provides access to the National Youth Theatre membership programme. Playing Up 1, which is a Level 2 qualification programme (eqivalent to 2 GCSEs), costs between £45 and £55k a year and can accommodate up to 20 young people. Playing Up 2 which is a Level 3 qualification programme costs between £100 and £120k a year and can accommodate up to 20 young people.
