Parity for Disability is a local charity providing vital services, information and support for children and young adults with multiple disabilities, their families and carers. We offer a range of services that are tailored to meet the individual needs of each of our clients, we would now like to extend our provision to include speech therapy on a regular and ongoing basis. Our 'Off the Wall' project is: To provide a speech and language therapy service that is tailor-made to meet the complex communication needs of young people with multiple disabilities who use the services of Parity for Disability and live in the Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire areas.

    Situation

We have access to a fully qualified and experienced speech and language therapist who specialises in working with children and young adults who have profound and multiple disabilities. The therapist proposes to offer a programme of activities that will focus on the communication needs of those within our client group who have not achieved use or understanding of speech and may be 'difficult to reach' and also people who have some verbal comprehension skills but have difficulty with output. The therapist will be employed for 18 hours a week working with up to 10 individuals using a wide range of approaches to the therapy, including Intensive Interaction and Augmentative and Alternative Communication i.e communication aids. She will also train the Charity's staff teams in Intensive Interaction to enhance the effectiveness of her sessions. Speech therapy is vitally important for people who have difficulty in communicating either non verbally or verbally and is very rarely available on the long term basis required to benefit people with profound levels of disability. The finance required to run this project for three years is £68,000. If you feel that you could donate all or any amount toward this very worthwhile project please contact us for further information.
